TXT It!

TXT It! is a WebFTP module. For more information about WebFTP, click here.

TXT It! allows the direct upload of text files (ASCII files that end in the ".txt" extension) to the root level of your domain. From here on, we will refer to this type of file as a "TXT" file.

There are two uses for TXT It!...

...uploading a robots.txt file, and adding or updating your Alexa information.

Upload Your Own robots.txt File

Be careful, this one is dangerous and we do not support it at SiteSell Support if you have problems or questions. This is geeky optional stuff, so you are on your own.

SBI! automatically creates a robots.txt file containing the following information for Search Engines (the sitemap file below is an example only)...

Sitemap: http://www.anguilla-beaches.com/onV27zft.xml

User-agent: msnbot
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /bin/
Crawl-delay: 30

User-agent: Slurp
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /bin/
Crawl-delay: 30

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /bin/

If you upload your own robots.txt file, you will overwrite that file. Please note -- if you do create your own robots.txt file, it must start with the above text. You may add to it, at your own risk. But your uploaded robots.txt file must start with the above text, especially if you want the Search Engines to have quick access to your sitemap (we ping the SEs with your sitemap every time you change your site content, but placement in the robots.txt file is also helpful).

It's dangerous to play with robots.txt. We do not advise it. However, if you have a special reason to do so, please make sure you know what you're doing. Click here for Web Robots Page, definitive information about dealing with robots.

Add/Update Alexa Information

You can also use TXT It! to add or update your Alexa contact information.

  1. Click here to edit the Alexa Contact Info for your site.
  2. Click on the Self-service Tools link. Log in to your Alexa account. If you don't already have an account, click on Register for an account.
  3. Type in your site's URL and click Submit.
  4. Verify that you are authorized to make changes to your site by creating and uploading (with TXT It!) a text file (add just a single space to the file content) with the file name that Alexa provides (see the screenshot below for an example)...

    Alexa verification text string

If you upload your pages, you can add the provided meta tag to head section of your home page, and use the meta tag option to verify. (If you aren't using XHTML, remember to remove the trailing slash from the end of the meta tag.)

  5. Click on the Verify my text file button or the Verify my meta tag button. If Alexa can verify your authorization, you'll receive a confirmation Web page. Click on the Edit Site Info button to add or edit your site info.

If you add anything other than your site's title and description (the Title and Description from SiteBuilder, or from the index.html file if you upload), then Alexa will expect to see that information on one or more of your Web pages. If you don't want your information public, leave all the fields blank except for Site Title and Site Description.

  6. Click on Submit.

Any time you need to change your information, repeat this process.
