Getting Data Into Monetize It!
#1 Content-Building
#2 Ad-Selling
#3 PPC-Buying
     • Google AdWords

Monetize It!, as you will soon see, is smart. But it needs you. Google AdWords is tucked away behind a username and password.

So MI! makes you this promise...

"Go get me the data and I'll show you the money." (No, we're not going to do the Tom Cruise/Jerry Maguire thing again, I promise.)

Isn't it nice to know that computers still need you for something?

You will need to register for Google's Pay-Per-Click (PPC) programs. Do this even if you don't plan to run a full-blown PPC campaign.

You may be surprised, though. You might find some super-cheap words that could turn you a nice profit even if you don't sell a product or service. If you do, don't be afraid to run a $50 experiment.

Remember, if a great idea like this fails, all you lose is $50. But if you can turn $50 into $100...

Action Guide - Smiley You merely leave it running.

Important Note: Yahoo! Search Marketing is no longer compatible with Monetize It!. Although you'll see buttons and links in MI! for Yahoo, please ignore them. Version 3 of Brainstorm It! will have MI! built in. You won't see mention of Yahoo! then.

Action Step #1 -- Register As An Advertiser With Google AdWords

Google has a smooth signup process, at...

https://adwords.google.com/select/

And they have an excellent demo...

http://services.google.com/tutorial/awsignup/awsignup.html

Play it as you register. What a snap! And your Ads will be up and running in minutes. Cost?

It costs US$5 to "activate" (i.e., open) your account. After that, your daily budget starts as low as US$0.01 (the minimum Cost Per Click bid) up to whatever limit you like.

The full Google AdWords FAQ is at...

https://adwords.google.com/support/?hl=en_US

Your Ad at Google consists of...

    Google Ad
  • Headline (like Yahoo!'s Title, except only 25 characters instead of 40)

  • Description -- two lines, each 35 characters or less (i.e., only 70 total instead of the "supposed" 190 at Yahoo!)

  • Two URLs (one that the searcher sees, and the actual destination). This makes it easy to show a simple (but relevant) URL to the searcher. Meanwhile, you use an invisible tracking link (explained below) so that you can track the clicks at your end.
A few tips for writing Titles and Descriptions...
  • Include the keyword, or at least the root of the keyword. For example, if you are bidding on "anguilla accommodations," you may not want to include "accommodations" in your Title or Description, especially if you want to use that Ad for "Anguilla hotels" and "Anguilla resorts." But at the very least, include the word Anguilla.

  • It's a good idea to start the Title with the keyword, if it is not too awkward to do so. Don't be clunky.

  • Match the exact need of the person searching for that keyword. Think it through.

  • And finally, enter the URL that you feel is most appropriate for these 5 keywords. It must relate to each keyword (hence the recommendation that you group keywords into groups that are similar in nature).
If your landing page is not relevant, it hurts your Conversion Rate. You are "paying-per-click" for nothing! And not only that...

Google could reject the listing... or even you, if you are off-target too often.

Why give you all these tips now, when you are not immediately ready to do an actual campaign? Well, you are creating a mini-campaign during this application. And you do want to put your best foot forward and be accepted, right?

Otherwise, you can't get all the nice data that Monetize It! uses. It's not the end of the world if they refuse your registration. MI! will give you a ton of useful info without Google's monetary data. But hey...

Go for it. And like I said, you just may surprise yourself and find some excellent little PPC-buying opportunities.

So put your best foot forward and do it right.

Register now at...

https://adwords.google.com/select/

I highly recommend the demo as you register.

And their full FAQ is at...

https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/index.py?fulldump=1

Google and requires you start the process by building a small campaign. It's a good way to verify that you're serious. And you are...

That's why you do not start this process until you have built at least 30 excellent KFCPs.

Google has no monthly minimum charges. But it's a good idea to keep a small campaign running, even if it's only to get that useful monetary data. You'll learn how to do this later.

Action Step #2 -- Weed and Prune Your MKL

Eliminating unnecessary keywords from your Master Keyword List may sound like a bit of work. But it's not hard labor. It's more like caring for your teeth. A slightly tedious, but important task.

Unlike brushing your teeth, you only have to floss and brush your MKL every few weeks... or months, depending on how often you eat (brainstorm). So really...

Use Brainstorm It!'s MKL to eliminate all words that will not form part of your Web site, before you do anything else. You do not want to deal with irrelevant keywords over and over, as we move forward from this starting point. Do this for several strong reasons...
  • It's good discipline for you. It keeps you highly focused.

  • It is MUCH easier to analyze all of this useful data when you’ve kept it to a reasonable number of keywords.

  • It's considerate. Why suck Google resources on "waste words"?

  • It's efficient. The more keywords you start with, the more time and energy you'll spend getting the data into Monetize It!.
Quality in... Quality out!

Here's how to cull your list down to a few hundred "keepers" for your site...

1) Paginate to 250 in MKL...

... to get as many keywords as possible on each page.

2) Review them one by one, and check all keywords that you'll delete. Continue on each following page until you have reviewed all the keywords.

Example (to the right)... The owner of anguilla-beaches.com would keep general words like "accommodations" and even a common misspelling like "accomodations" because they are relevant to her site about Anguilla.

Check all super-generic words, nonsense, and anything that won't fit your Site Concept.

In the example, she'd dump "acorn." -- Although "ACORN" is actually a tech service in Anguilla, it's not going to be relevant to her site and most searchers mean something else when they enter "acorn" (especially squirrels!).

3) Delete the Checked keywords by clicking on the "Delete Checked" link.

In this example, "yacht vacation" had little potential, so it also got the axe.

Complete this step now. I promise... You will be very glad that you spent the time here refining and tightening your Master Keyword List. Two of the three parts of MI! depend on this list. And your time is valuable.

Action Step #3 -- Make "Final" Additions To Your MKL

Just before you move forward into Monetize It!, be sure that your nicely tightened MKL is not missing any good keywords. Here's how...

1) Google Webmaster Tools now gives some great hints about keywords that are in demand for your site. All you have to do is log into Google Webmaster Tools at...

http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/

Click on the Manage http://www.your-sbi-domain.com/ link.

Then click on the Statistics tab (near top of "Summary Page").

The "Query Stats" page has two important columns...

  • Top search queries -- the top queries to Google that return pages from your site

  • Top search query clicks -- the queries that received the greatest number of clicks from search results.
For anguilla-beaches.com, the two columns on the Sitemap stats page look like this...

Both columns may find new, relevant keywords for your MKL. The second column contains keywords that are more relevant to your site since humans click on them. The first column is more likely to be "accidental" (ex., "hat" has nothing to do with Anguilla). Both can provide useful information.

For example, anguilla-beaches.com ranks at #41 for a tremendous generic word, "beaches." A few more pages about "beaches" and a couple of inbound links with "beaches" in the text just might tip this upward. As always, "keep it real" and don't spend too much time on this. But it's worth an effort if it fits.

"Brad Pitt" appears in the first column due to its intense demand. People do not click on the text search to visit Anguilla, so it does not appear in the second column. An extra page or two about Brad might change that. As well, "Brad Pitt" image search does send enormous traffic to anguilla-beaches.com, which monetizes through simple Google ads. (She is actually planning a celebrity Tier 2 page, which will lead to several other celebrity pages.)

A more typical example, this time using the second column... "best caribbean island" was not on anguilla-beaches.com's MKL. She noticed "best caribbean island" here at Google Sitemaps, added it to her MKL (it had an excellent Demand of 339 and Supply of 1150, with Profitability of 295), and created a high-value Web page for it.

2) Your Search Engine HQ may also be a source of "new" keywords for your MKL.

Huh? How can a keyword be "new" if you have a page about it? Simple...

It happens if you create a page based on a Specific Keyword that is not from your Master Keyword List.

If you do that, that keyword does not later appear in Monetize It!. Why not? Because the MI! modules (Content-Building, Ad-Selling, PPC-Buying) are driven by your MKL. So if a Specific Keyword comes from your brain and not the MKL, it won't appear in the MKL or any of the MI! modules.

Now is the time to add Specific Keywords from the SEHQ (that are not in your MKL), to your MKL. It's easy. Just click the Add SEHQ Keywords To MKL button.

Explanation Of What Will Happen

First, a bit of background information! Check this out for yourself, if you like....

Review the complete list of your Specific Keywords in your Search Engine HQ (SE HQ). Compare that list with your Master Keyword List by opening a second browser window (right-click on the Site Central link and then click to SE HQ). Scroll down to where you see the SE HQ list of keywords...

Compare your list of keywords in the Keyword Searches Report column with your Master Keyword List (sorted alphabetically). If you have created pages with words that are not from your MKL, these will appear as blue rows in the Ad-Selling module.

It's time to add them to your MKL. Here's how...

Clicking the Add SEHQ Keywords To MKL button (in Monetize It! Home) does the above comparison for you, and then adds the "blue keywords" to your MKL. It not only lets you know if there are any Specific Keywords that need to be added to your MKL, it tells you which ones and does it all for you.

Simply click and then follow the instructions to start the process...

1) It may take a minute or two, but you will soon receive a list of the additional keywords in your SEHQ that are not in your MKL.

2) Next, Brainstorm It! confirms that it has obtained the Wordtracker Demand for all keywords being added. This costs you one Wordtracker credit.

3) Finally, Brainstorm It! gets Supply data from all the added keywords. The page scrolls in, as usual for "Get All Supply," one keyword at a time, until finished.

And that's it! All Specific Keywords are now included in your MKL, with full Demand and Supply data!

P.S. For the future, it's best to derive new Web pages from keywords based on your MKL. If you do get an idea for a new Web page based on a keyword that is not in your MKL, add it to your MKL and research it (Demand, Supply, Profitability, etc.) before building the page. That way, you keep your MKL and your SEHQ list of keywords in sync. You'll also have a better idea of the keyword's Profitability.

Action Step #4 -- Pull Data Together for Monetize It!

Guide - Click Heal Congratulations! You now have "the perfect MKL" and are now a full-fledged advertiser on Google. You are ready to...
Monetize It!.

It's a new world, with new opportunities, as explained above. And Monetize It! (MI!) is here to capitalize on that. MI! delivers more than the 80-20 solution...

Action Guide - Smiley95-5!

Google's tools are excellent. So now...

Monetize It! has evolved to meet all this new and useful data. It pulls Google's monetary data together, along with all the other SBI! data (brainstorming research and other areas of SBI! such as traffic stats and SE rankings).

Obviously, it does this in ways that no other software, not even Google themselves, ever can. Why "obviously"? Because no other company keeps all this data in one central database.

Action Guide - Smiley Who me? Bragging? Well, maybe just a little, but here are just a few examples...

  • It ties Google information to how each keyword ranks in Search Engine HQ.

  • It generates a bottom line dollar value ("Keyworth") for each keyword.

  • It shows "Keyworth" and "# Visitors" (visitor count) for each keyword... and so on!
Power and Flexibility

Raw newcomer to the Net? Monetize It! will show you new areas for profitable Content-Building.

More advanced? Perhaps with 40-60 pages or more? Already generating some Ad income? MI! shows you how to triple Ad-selling revenues!

PPC-buyer? The power and convenience of having this data all in one place, visible at a sweep, will delight you.

If you are not (yet) an experienced PPC marketer, you'll do well with MI!, too. It's just that, well...

Action Guide - Wink ... It's a shame that you won't appreciate it as much... yet!

The 30 Page Trigger

Monetize It! is not for everyone. You must have built at least 30 pages. And the more content you build, the more benefit you'll get. There's that traffic snowball again! Monetize It! delivers opportunities and benefits for...

  • "Pure Infopreneurs" -- find profitable new Content-Building opportunities

  • Ad-Sellers -- maximize income

  • Sellers of Goods and Services -- maximize your Return On Investment from PPC-buying campaigns.
Let's get started...

Got Your Tightened Master Keyword List All Weeded Out?

Great! Once you've eliminated all words that will not form part of your Web site, you're ready to export the remaining keywords. Here's what to do...

Export your entire, tightened list of keywords by...

Adding a check to "Export Keywords Only", and then clicking on Export All.

This exports a comma-separated text file with the file name "all_keywords.csv" onto your hard disk. (Hopefully, your desktop, but if not, you'll find it by doing a search for "all_keywords.csv".)

If you open that file, you will see a list of your keywords.

Each keyword is "quoted" (wrapped in quotes).

You are going to copy-and-paste the entire list of quoted keywords into Google AdWords, in order to get CPC (Cost Per Click) and PCDM (Predicted # of Clicks per Month -- another indication of Demand) data back.

Windows Users

If this file opens automatically in Microsoft Excel, the keywords will not be in the correct format to copy-and-paste. To open the file in Wordpad instead, open it from within the Wordpad program itself (File > Open).

Google considers keywords wrapped in quotes as a request for them to apply "phrase matching" to the keywords. What does that mean?

If you enter your keyword in quotation marks to Google AdWords when you do create an Ad, you Ad only appears when a surfer searches for that exact keyword. For example, say you want to do an Ad for "tennis shoes" (with quotes)...

  • Your Ad will appear when a user searches on the phrase "tennis shoes" exactly (not "shoes of tennis").

  • The Ad will appear whether the surfer entered "tennis shoes" with or without quotes (most enter a search without quotes).

  • The Ad might also appear for other keywords when your quoted phrase is within the query (ex., "red tennis shoes" and "Nike tennis shoes," but not for "tennis court shoes."
In other words, using "quote-wrapped keywords" in your "all_keywords.csv" file delivers a more targeted visitor.

For more information...

https://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6100&ctx=en:top5

And for an excellent demo...

http://services.google.com/tutorial/keyword_matching/google_keyword.html

Bottom line? Do your MKL homework well. Then export only the words you'll need for your site. Your MKL exports keywords already quoted, ready to copy-and-paste.

Please keep the quotes, even if you are a PPC guru. You can change to any other keyword matching option, later, when you return to build your campaign (although this is the recommended match for most situations).

But right now.... apples to apples. Monetize It! needs to count on you doing things in a certain way so its calculations and recommendations make the most sense.

Action Step #5 -- Get Google's Monetary Data

Do not proceed further until you have completed Action Steps #1-4. If you have completed these, you're ready to get the Google data.

Your nice, tight Master Keyword List is, as discussed earlier, your Site Content Blueprint. It is also the foundation upon which you build by importing Cost Per Click (CPC) and Predicted # of Clicks per Month (PCDM) data from Google and combining that data with your brainstorming and traffic/SEHQ data.

The magic is getting close. Let's do it.

This next step gets the CPC and PCDM from Google. You'll import this data into Monetize It!. Then you'll have all you need to find new Content-Building areas, maximize Ad income ("sell high"), and build smart PPC campaigns ("buy low").

Ready? Let's start the fun at Google, since your account will be open there immediately (no waiting!). Log into...
choose-tools-google
https://adwords.google.com/select/Login

That lands you on your Campaign Summary page. Explore it and the rest of Google's backend a bit later. Right now...

Click on Tools in the upper left corner.

Once you're on the Tools page, click on the Traffic Estimator link, which takes you to that extremely important tool...

Google Traffic Estimator Tool

Here's how to use the Traffic Estimator tool...

1) Enter Keywords -- You can see that anguilla-beaches.com has copied-and-pasted her entire list of quoted keywords from all_keywords.csv into the "keywords" box. You can copy-and-paste up to your full maximum of 1,000 (but as we have just seen, if you have "checked-and-deleted," you should have well under 500 keywords).

2) Choose a currency -- Set the value to USD (to compare apples to apples later) and leave the next box empty. Use Google's default, which will suggest values that deliver Ads in the top position 85% of the time.

Apples To Apples

Monetize It! needs to count on you doing things in a certain way so its calculations and recommendations make the most sense.

This allows you to keep matters consistent over time. You can adjust your actual bids later. Remember...

You're researching, right now, not bidding. You'll be back to bid shortly.

3) Select targeting -- If your site, subject matter and orientation are English and if you can deliver your service, digital product or other monetization models worldwide, K-I-S-S and select "English," "Countries and Territories," and "All Countries and Territories." Or modify accordingly.

All set? Click on the Continue button (as shown above).

That brings you to an invaluable page. Study it for awhile if you like, but your real study will happen in Monetize It!. You will return here later with a separate list of keywords, ready to buy low!

Here's the page (just below). Getting excited? Anguilla-beaches.com certainly is. She sees some nice, juicy words that can be bought for a song. And she sees others for which she'll start selling Google AdSense Ads.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves. Trust me when I tell you that you'll study the data in Monetize It! later. Right now, click on the "Download as .csv" link...

?

Like Mileage, "Screenshots May Vary"

From time to time, Google changes layouts, so screenshots may vary. But the process stays the same. So don't worry if the above screenshot does not match what you see now. Just click to download the .csv file (explained immediately below). We'll take care of all the rest.

Save that file to your desktop, giving it the File Name of "google-monetize.csv". (Note: Mac users may not have the option to name this file. Just note the file name, probably "estimates.csv.")

Action Step #6 -- Time For Even More Fun... Yahoooo!

Important Note: Yahoo! is no longer compatible with Monetize It!

Do not proceed further until you have completed Action Steps #1-4. If you have completed these, you're ready to get the Yahoo! monetary data.

Let's continue the good times at Yahoo!. Hopefully, a human has approved your application by now. Log into...

http://yahoosearchmarketing.com/

The login lands you on your Account Summary page. Explore it and the rest of Yahoo!'s backend a bit later. Right now, Click on Manage Sponsored Search link (in the top navbar)...

Choose Sponsored Yahoo

This lands you on Sponsored Search - Manage Categories. Click on the Add Listings link...

Anguilla Yahoo Add Listings

This brings you to the Add Listings Web page, a very important page, both now (while you are gathering data) and later (when you buy Ads cheap). Here's what to do...

Under Select a category for your keywords, click on the Select radio button and choose the drop-down category unassigned.

Ready to copy-and-paste your keywords? Unlike Google, you can only copy-and-paste 500 keywords at a time (that should normally suffice -- if not, you'll do the remainder after you finish this processing of the first 500).

Do it as shown here...

Anguilla Yahoo Enter Keywords

Yahoo!'s keyword-researching is not as simple as Google's...

Yahoo! makes you create a listing (Title, Description, and URL) for your keywords before you get to the "juicy data" page. That would take forever, if you were going to do all 500 one-at-a-time.

Anguilla Yahoo Save Single But... you're not. Not for now, anyway. Later, yes, if PPC-buying makes sense for you. But this is research.

Scroll right down to the bottom of the 2nd page of the Add Listings process and click on the Single Title & Description for All Keywords button...

Anguilla Yahoo Enter Listing This takes you to a page where you can enter one listing for all the keywords.

Copy-and-paste one of the listings that you already have, as shown on the left.

Then click on the Continue button.

Now you are on Yahoo!'s version of the "invaluable page." Look over it for awhile if you like, but your real studying will happen in Monetize It!.

You may return here later with a separate list of keywords, ready to buy low!

Here's the page...

Save as html from Yahoo

This is normally a "working page," if you operate like most advertisers. But you're going to work much smarter than that.

You have Monetize It!, where you have far more data pulled together... your SE rankings, traffic counts, Google and Yahoo! data, Keyworth, and Demand-Supply-Profitability, of course. In short, you have everything you need to make truly smart Content-building, Ad-buying, and PPC-buying decisions.

So... you may come back here later, with a well-researched, super-smart set of keywords, to "buy low," if you like. Right now, though, you'll save all this data as HTML documents (sorry, Yahoo! doesn't provide a CSV-export function). You'll save the data onto your desktop by doing the following...

1)VIEW > SOURCE in the menu for the first results page or right-click on the results page itself (control-click on a Mac) and then click on the "View source" option, and then...

2)FILE > SAVE AS -- enter "yahoo-mi01.html" as the File name.
Leave Save as Type at the default selection (not all browsers show this option). Then save it to your desktop, so that the "yahoo-mi01.html" file is easy to find.

Before continuing, please read the following warning to ensure you do not accidentally create this campaign and end up paying Yahoo! for an undesired PPC campaign.

WARNING!! As you go through the next steps, be careful not to fall into this common trap! DO NOT click on the Continue button if this is your last page of results, the one that lists the "Estimated Monthly Cost" total at the bottom, just above the Continue button.

Yahoo! only returns 40 keywords per results page, unfortunately. So now it's time to save the rest of your results pages. If you have more than 40 keywords, click Continue to get to the next page of results.

If this is not your last page of keyword results, click Continue. Once you've gotten to your next results page, follow the same steps (VIEW > SOURCE and then FILE > SAVE AS) to save this page of results as "yahoo-mi02.html".

Continue this process with each results page until all keywords have been saved, and you are therefore at the last set of keywords.

Caution!

If you click Continue on the last page of results, you'll end up creating these listings, WHICH YOU DO NOT WANT TO DO! Not yet, as mentioned above.

Look carefully and make sure this page is not your last page of results before clicking the Continue button.

You'll know it's your last page when there is an "Estimated Monthly Cost" total at the end, just above the Continue button. That's how much you could spend if you click Continue!

When you've saved your last results page, DO NOT click "Continue" when you see your "Estimated Monthly Cost" at the end!

Instead...

  • If you have a total of more than 500 keywords in your Master Keyword List...

    1) Click Manage Listings and then Add Listing.

    2) Start the process over again, overwriting your existing list of keywords with your next list (the remaining keywords).

  • If you have fewer than 500 keywords, close the Yahoo! Search Marketing window and your temporary listings will NOT be saved.

You have completed Quality In, Quality Out. In other words...

You have carefully combed through your Master Keyword List, deleting all keywords that don't belong in your site. (When you are just starting, that should usually be in the 200-500 word range.)

You then exported that data and copied-and-pasted it into Google and Yahoo! ("Quality In").

Google gave you back a CSV file, while you saved your Yahoo! data as HTML files. Both are loaded with invaluable information ("Quality Out").

The excitement builds! All the data is about to come together in Monetize It!.

-->

Action Step #6 Onwards to Monetize It!

Do not proceed further until you have completed Action Steps #1-4, and Action Step #5 (Google). If you have completed these, you're ready! Onwards and upwards....

Yes, it's time to Monetize It!.

First, import the data from Google into MI!. It's easy...

1) Choose MONETIZE IT! HOME from the MI!/BI! dropdown menu...

That takes you to the MI! home.

This is where you will import the Google CPC and PCDM data.

Imagine, both sets of data, together, side by side!

2) Click the Import Google $ Data button to import the CSV file(s) that you exported from Google in Action Step #5.

Just follow the instructions from there.

Once you import the Google data, the three Monetize It! sections, Content-Building, Ad-Selling and PPC-Buying become a treasure-trove of information. And that means...

It's MI! Time!

It's time to "show you the money." All the data you need is all in one place. You have everything necessary to make brilliant decisions.

Because Monetize It! has such an abundance of data, it’s broken into 3 different tables for the 3 most common uses of Monetize It!. It's usually best to start with Content-Building.

But if you feel Ad-Selling or PPC-buying is more immediately relevant, skip right there! You're off and running!

#1 Content-Building

Above all else, build content. This module helps you find "Content Holes." It uncovers valuable ("high-Keyworth") keywords for which you should create more Content, as well as how/where to get more out of existing Content.

The Content-Building module presents the most fundamental analysis of the data. It is for all SBIers.

#2 Ad-Selling

If you are selling Ads, "sell high."

Do you place Google AdSense ads on your site? MI!'s Ad-Selling module helps you maximize ad revenues.

MI! shows you where to place ads and where not to.

#3 PPC-Buying

Do you have a high-profit product or service to sell? "Buy low!"

Use MI!'s PPC-Buying module to find cheap, targeted keywords for PPC campaigns at Google AdWords that drive more targeted traffic to your high-ROI goods & services.

This view contains the most data and offers the ability to Export all raw (non-calculated) data from all three displays. This is just for those who love to play with spreadsheets...

Action Guide - Wink ... and sharp knives! Slice and dice that data!

Best Way To Proceed?

Get the "big picture" first, by progressing through three displays one-by-one, starting with Content-Building and finishing with PPC-Buying.

Action Guide - Smiley I highly recommend getting the "big picture" first.

Next: Use Monetize It! for Content-Building.
