Brainstorm It! - The Big Picture
Brainstormer
Master Keyword List

The Joy of Brainstorming

In the "real" world, brainstorming can be an intensive, draining process. And that's the easy part! The research that follows is tedious. And finally, storing and analyzing all of the data makes brainstorming & researching look like child's play.

SBI!'s Brainstormer makes the whole process a joy.

Keyword brainstorming generates keywords based upon a "seed." You enter a "Brainstorm Seed Word" and Brainstormer delivers you keywords. These keywords will become topics ("Keyword-Focused Content Pages") in your Web site.

Tip for Best Results
Firefox is 20 times faster than Internet Explorer for brainstorming and a few times faster when site-building...
Click here to download this advanced & free browser.

Brainstormer is the best keyword brainstorming and researching tool in the world.

Click-click...

It's that easy. Just follow the 2 STEPS...

STEP 1    Select a Brainstormer Function

STEP 2    Select a Brainstormer Resource

Important Recommendation

For optimal brainstorming performance, we recommend the Firefox browser for PCs and Macs. Click here for details about this free download.

This help page explains Brainstormer's Functions and Resources...

I) Vertical Brainstorming
   • Singular OR Plural
   • Singular AND Plural
   • Ultimate Verticalizer (30-Page Milestone)

II) Lateral Brainstorming
   • Google Top 200
   • Ultimate Outside Lateralizer
   • Ultimate Inside Lateralizer (30-Page Milestone)

PLEASE NOTE...

We refer to a Brainstorm It! 2-step combination of Function and Resource (also called a "query") in the following format...

Function (STEP 1) > Resource (STEP 2)

For example...

Vertical Brainstorm > Singular OR Plural

both steps and help

Important Tip: Click on the Click Here For Information AFTER Completing Steps 1 & 2 text link that appears below Steps 1 and 2, as shown in the screenshot above. Do it every time you first use a query or if it's been a while since you've used it. This link provides the "nuts & bolts" help and info and instructions you need for each Brainstormer Resource.

The Big Picture Plan

Each of the 2 Functions (Vertical and Lateral Brainstorming) has 2 or more Resources (AKA "queries"). You don't need to use all the queries to do your first full brainstorm on your Site Concept keyword. On DAY 2, you do...

Vertical Brainstorm > Singular OR Plural (or Singular AND Plural)

You do this query for each of the 3 top Site Concepts you're considering. The MKL automatically shows Value Demand and Real Supply and the resulting Profitability (Demand/Supply, times 1000) for all brainstormed keywords.

Based on the keywords generated for the three concepts, along with their Demand and Supply, you choose your best Site Concept. Then, in DAY 3, you do...

Lateral Brainstorm > Google Top 200 -- adds yet more keywords!

Vertical brainstorming generates keywords that contain the Brainstorm Seed Word (ex., if you enter "anguilla," all brainstormed words will contain "anguilla" in them).

Lateral brainstorming generates keywords that are related to the Brainstorm Seed Word but do not contain it (ex., if you enter "anguilla," a lateralized word is "caribbean").

These simple 2 steps during DAYs 2 and 3 give you an excellent list of "vertical" and "lateral" keywords for your Site Concept Keyword, complete with Value Demand, Real Supply and Profitability... everything you need to get started.

The Action Guide explains how you could go deeper. But usually, two simple brainstorms (a Vertical and a Lateral), and you're done at this point.

As you become more familiar with Brainstorm It!, you develop a "feel" for this powerful tool. You'll use each of the resources as you need them. For example...

Perhaps a new niche develops, one with profit potential (ex., "Anguilla condos"). You might decide to do a Lateral Brainstorm on that term first, analyze and delete some terms in the Master Keyword List, and then decide what other Brainstormer resources to use to build up this interesting new profit center.

Bottom line... there is no "forced order" to use the resources. Ultimately, it's your tool. But the above simple two steps do tend to yield gold!

IMPORTANT CAVEAT: HUMAN BRAIN REQUIRED!

The Brainstormer saves weeks of brainstorming and research. The keywords and data will turn into a complete blueprint for your site. But please be aware...

Computers gather and report all this data. Computers don't think. Weird words creep in. Bots (automated programs) and page spammers can skew Demand and Supply.

Brainstorm It! performs tremendously complicated and useful tasks. The keywords themselves are precious and the numbers are useful, if considered as guidance to think about and not as "commands to follow." Remember...

BI! does not have a brain. It merely shows you what it finds. If something appears weird or wrong, it probably is. Why?

Because you can think. The Brainstormer is terrific and gets better and better as online resources improve. But heed this advice...

Do not base major decisions on data unless it makes sense.

Up to now, only humans can THINK. That's good news, by the way. If computers could think...

... they would soon realize that they don't need us.

If you're having trouble making sense of brainstorming results, "help and be helped" at the Brainstorm It! forum.

Oh yes, a final note about words with apostrophes...

If you brainstorm "women's golf," you will get an excellent MKL for "womens golf" (no apostrophe). Reinsert the apostrophe when you write your content. The engines will deal with it all correctly.

The Brainstormer Functions

Here are all the Functions and Resources that Brainstormer delivers...

I) Vertical Brainstorming

The "Vertical Brainstorming" function generates keywords that contain the Brainstorm Seed Word. For example, if you enter "anguilla," all brainstormed words will contain "anguilla" in them (ex., "anguilla villas," "anguilla real estate").

Ia) Singular OR Plural

Choose this option if your Seed Word makes sense only in the singular or only in the plural form. For example, if your Seed Word is "pants" (an item of clothing), you do not want the returned keywords to include the singular form of the Seed, "pant" (which means "to breathe quickly"). And "mumps" has no plural form.

An example where the singular form ONLY makes sense is "New York" because the plural ("New Yorks") is nonsensical. You would also choose this if you were brainstorming "appendicitis" since no one uses the plural form of this word.

Ready? Let's do it! Every query starts with the same two steps. In this case, the particulars are...

STEP 1    Select Vertical Brainstorm

STEP 2    Select Singular OR Plural

Then click on the Click Here For Information AFTER Completing Steps 1 & 2 link for help and instructions (do this the first time you try any new query at Brainstormer).

Enter your first Site Concept keyword ("anguilla" - without the quotes - in the screenshot below) and click on the Brainstorm It! button...

You'll do this Vertical query (or the Singular AND Plural one) for all 3 of the Site Concepts you consider during DAY 2 (see DAY 2 of the Action Guide).

What Is "WTB"?

All Brainstorm It! queries use Wordtracker (a third-party paid service normally costing the same price as SBI!, per year) to fine-tune the keyword brainstorming process. Wordtracker has long been recommended in the SBI! Resources HQ. They maintain a database of 300+ million searches from major Meta Search Engines such as DogPile.

This is not the limited, free-promo version of Wordtracker. You have access to the full, paid-Wordtracker database through the BI! tools, the same one that costs US$299/year.

We pay Wordtracker per query to integrate their data into ours and deliver unique results. We pay for your initial Wordtracker balance ("WTB") of 25 free Wordtracker queries, which is normally more than enough to select and fully brainstorm a Site Concept Keyword.

The "Singular OR Plural" and the "Singular AND Plural" queries each cost one credit even if a specific seed word generates no data (so be careful of typos). After your balance reaches zero, you can buy additional Wordtracker packages very inexpensively.

Don't hesitate to use these important queries and buy an additional package, if necessary. Since we pay Wordtracker to provide this service, it can't be free. But it is cheap...

  • $20 for a Wordtracker Package of 100 queries
  • $50 for Wordtracker 500 Query Package (a dime per query).

500 queries will last you forever for your site (but an annual subscription directly at Wordtracker costs hundreds of dollars!). This data will form the Content Blueprint for your entire site, so do not hesitate to do these queries.

Note: All Brainstorm It! queries call on the Wordtracker database. But the two queries discussed above, and the Ultimate Outside Lateralizer (see below), which costs up to 3 credits, are the only ones you're charged for. SiteSell pays for all the other query calls to Wordtracker.

How do you know how many Wordtracker queries you have left?

The queries that use Wordtracker show the Wordtracker Balance as "WTB" with a number after it. For example...

singular or plural

Wordtracker Demand (WTB 24) means you have 24 Wordtracker queries remaining in your WT Balance.

When the Balance hits zero, and you select one of these queries from the drop-down, you receive a message asking if you want to order a Wordtracker Query Package of either 100 ($20) or 500 ($50) queries.

Ib) Singular AND Plural

Choose this option if your Seed Word "works" in both singular and plural forms without changing the meaning within the niche you're considering. For example, if you want to create a site about "penny stocks," enter "penny stock (always enter the singular form of the word) and select "Singular AND Plural, like this...

singular and plural
Always enter the singular form in this query.

Both forms of the word make sense and are relevant to the niche, so choosing this option is correct. Brainstormer automatically "pluralizes" the entered Seed word, brainstorms both forms, and then delivers the optimal blended set of keywords.

II) Lateral Brainstorming

"Lateral Brainstorming" generates keywords that are related to the Brainstorm Seed Word but do not contain it (ex., if you enter "anguilla," examples of lateralized words are "caribbean" and "travel" and "Barbados").

IIa) Google Top 200
You have a choice. You could spend hours, if not days, dreaming up hundreds of keywords/topics related to a certain Brainstorm Seed Word. Brainstorming is hard work. Once you've thought of the obvious, it's not easy.

So why not let others do it for you? Not just "others," actually, but some of the "smartest others" (those who get their sites into the Top 200 at Google!).

After Brainstormer calls the top 200 URLs from Google (and remember, these are the best-ranking Web pages for your important Seed Word), it does all the rest. It sends "GoGetIt" (your loyal SBI! spider-friend) to those URLs.

GoGetIt spiders through the top 200 Web pages and gets the keywords that those pages use in their META keyword tag (yes, keywords that their Webmasters spend hours thinking up and then including on each page of their sites for the engines!). It brings them all back to Brainstormer.

Brainstormer then analyzes the words, keeping the ones that appear most frequently and running a special algorithm to deliver the best of the "one-ofs" (eliminating most of the nonsense words). It then presents them to you in your Master Keyword List for this query. You will see many new lateralized keywords.

Presto! Instant brainstorm! Well, not quite "instant" -- the process takes a few minutes. So it shows you this message while it's doing its work...

Brainstormer is, after all, visiting 200 sites, doing work that would take hours manually. Think of it...

200 people working for you... for free!

Which Is More Important? Vertical or Lateral?

Vertical. The words are directly relevant. Lateral takes you in good, new directions and can help you in many ways, as described.

But let's say you have 750 juicy "vertical words" after pruning. You'd hate to bring it any lower. Should you cut to "make room" for Lateral?

Nope. The Google Top 200 will "fill to 1,000."

IIb) Ultimate Outside Lateralizer

If you're just starting SBI!, this is an optional query. Use it...

  • if you just like to be really complete, or
  • if your Google Top 200 lateral brainstorm seemed a bit lean, or

  • before you give up on a Site Concept Keyword you really like!

If you're an SBI! veteran, use it when you need more ideas.

The Ultimate Outside Lateralizer brings back the Top 200 sites for searches at other (non-Google) major Search Engines (ex., Yahoo!). Unlike the Google Top 200 query, that's just the beginning...

The "Ultimate" is so named because this lateralizer then also brings back 10-12 sites that are related to each of those 200 sites, for a grand total of (up to) 2,500 sites (including the original 200 returned by the engines).

Now, imagine how you'd feel if you had to review 2,500 sites. Phew! The Ultimate Outside Lateralizer is going to do that for you instead. Yippee!

This brainstorm query is super-intensive. GoGetIt (yes, our faithful spider friend) goes to all 2,500 sites (2,500 Webmasters, all working for you!), brings back the META keywords just like it did for Google Top 200. And here's where it gets really smart...

It eliminates all the words that you already have in your MKL! After all, there's no point in seeing those again -- you've got them. What's left?

Everything else! And this time, GoGetIt e-mails the entire keyword list to you, as an attachment, along with each keyword's Value Demand and Real Supply.

The "related" search allows the brainstormer to get very wide indeed, going farther afield than a straight search. For example, a search for "Anguilla" will certainly bring back the Anguilla government's site among the Top 200. Sites related to that might include sites of the government of other Caribbean islands.

Since this process visits up to 2,500 sites and builds a list that excludes all the keywords that you have already brainstormed (i.e., this list will not include any keywords from your MKL), expect a large number of keywords.

GoGetIt e-mails this list to prevent you from going (way!) over your 1,000 keyword limit. It goes to your address on record in your "My Accounts" section of SBI!. Please make sure that address is up-to-date.

You receive it as an attached comma-separated text file (".csv" or CSV). Examine it at your convenience, following the tips included in that e-mail. This makes it easy for you to pick-and-choose which keywords to keep. You upload only the "good ones," avoiding the 1,000 keyword limit.

If you're unfamiliar with CSV files, a review is available at...
http://help.sitesell.com/help-and-strategies/brainstorm-it/help-mkl.html#EXPORTING
(Click your browser's BACK button to return here when finished.)

Important Note: When you upload your keywords, the Value Demand is added automatically. Any words with Value Demand equal to zero are not added to the MKL. So it is possible that some of the words you upload will not appear in your MKL.

Follow the tips in the e-mail and keep the best keywords. There'll be many words of little value due to the nature of this query and the goal to be complete. But you will find some surprisingly useful "needles in the haystack." Follow the instructions in that e-mail to upload them.

Two More "Ultimate" Brainstormers?

In DAY 10, you learn about the 30-Page Milestone. When you reach that milestone, two new "ultimate" brainstormers become available to you...

  • Ultimate Inside Lateralizer    Why "Inside"? It looks "inside" your site and brings back all the keywords (can be thousands!) that have "found" your site during the previous 90 days, along with how many visitors each keyword delivered and what the Value Demand and Real Supply is for those keywords. A "must" for extending into new areas of profitable content.

  • Ultimate Verticalizer ("UV")    The Ultimate Verticalizer pushes the Vertical Brainstorm envelope more than 10-fold. How? It uses every last SBI! resource that generates keywords, including keywords from billions of pages spidered by our very own SBIder. The Ultimate Verticalizer (UV) looks across more than 60 million unique keywords in the SBI! database and brings back all the keywords that contain your Site Concept keyword. I guarantee...

    There are no others...

It should have been called "The Ultimate Icing On The Cake."

Wrapping Up

The completion of the full-brainstorming of the Site Concept you chose in DAY 2 is laid out in DAY 3 of the Action Guide. By the time you complete these two DAYs, your Content Blueprint for your chosen Site Concept should be forming in your mind.

The above order of queries is not fixed -- you can vary it and customize it as much as you like, as long as you ultimately (i.e., at the end of DAY 5) end up with your three all-important goals...

  • your Site Concept finalized and fine-tuned
  • Valuable PREselling Proposition and Voice, and

  • 3-tier keyword structure/Content Blueprint.

After you "finish" brainstorming and start building your site, return to the Brainstormer periodically. Yes, even when your site has 500 pages and is a Top 1% site...

The world changes. Your niche changes. New keywords and opportunities, not to mention new directions, will occur. And Brainstorm It! will be right here for you...

... with me.
