Get Your Niche Goldilocks-Right

How To Do a Quick High-Level Niche Check

Wordtracker's free keyword tool provides a quick and easy way to...

In the Wordtracker tool, enter your keyword and click! Repeat over and over again. Then stack them up and compare. Here's an example of how to take one Site Concept ("Italy") and refine it until it's at the correct level...

See how Italy is going to be "too broad"? As a rule of thumb, any keyword with a Demand ("Searches" in Wordtracker's tool) that is greater than 3,000 is going to be toooo broad.

Ditto, therefore, for Rome!

But Sicily looks interesting. Why?

As a ballpark rule, consider Demands between 300 and 3,000. Remember that any Site Concept with a Demand towards the higher end of the scale is bound to be harder to "win." It can be done, but it will take more effort and time.

Caveat

Don't over-rely on numbers. Use your common sense. And don't be put off if some keywords seem strange. This is just a "big picture screen." You will do your fine work in Brainstorm It!.

This tool is an excellent way to quick-screen and refine according to your circumstances! It's important to scale your expectations and goals to the time and effort you will devote to your business. So...

If you only plan on putting 1-2 hours per week into SBI!, pick (or refine) a niche that has Demand toward the lower end of the scale.

"Isn't High Demand Good?"

Yes, it is good. But here's the beauty of this quick screen. Once the Demand gets too high, you can be sure that the Supply follows. "High-demand niches" are overworked -- the Supply is invariably also too high.

Shifting Gears to Brainstorm It!

The free Wordtracker keyword tool is a great way to quick-screen ideas without having to worry about Supply yet! It yields up to 100 keywords, very useful for a high overview of potential Site Concepts. Then shift gears, using Brainstorm It! to determine your Site Concept, and for your fine, final work.

When you use Brainstorm It!, which uses its own data for 60,000,000+ keywords and data from the paid version of Wordtracker, you get up to 1,000 keywords at a time, and not just more keywords...

You'll also do more advanced, "lateral" brainstorming in DAY 3. Brainstorm It! gives you a complete set of keywords, with the best data, for any Site Concept.

Need More Research?

If you still have a large number of possible Site Concepts, there are more tools you can use to narrow the list to 3.

Search It! provides these and other great ways to quick-check the viability of many possible Site Concepts. Use them to stimulate new ideas for Site Concepts. For example, in the screenshot below is Surfwax (Outside-The-Box). Wordtracker's free tool is also available here.

You can even do research in other languages (using the Google AdWords Keyword Tool)! If you're especially interested in other languages, see this TNT article.
