Mining "The Long Tail"
Help & Strategies for Brainstormer closes with this thought...
After you "finish" brainstorming and start building your site, return to the Brainstormer periodically. Yes, even when your site has 500 pages and is a Top 1% site...
The world changes. Your niche changes. New keywords and opportunities, not to mention new directions, will occur. And Brainstorm It! will be right here for you, with the Ultimate Verticalizer, the Ultimate Inside Lateralizer, and all the other Brainstormer queries.
It's time now for the Ultimate Inside Lateralizer.
The larger your site gets and the more traffic it receives, the better this lateralizer gets.
The Ultimate Inside Lateralizer brings back hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of keywords for which pages of your site have been found at a Search Engine during the previous 90 days.
It eliminates all the words that you already have in your MKL. Since you already have them, there's no point in seeing them again.
And just like the "Ultimate Outside Lateralizer," SBI! e-mails the entire keyword list to you. It includes the list as an attachment containing the following information for each Keyword....
- Keyword = each new keyword brainstormed
- Real Supply
- # Visitors = number of visitors who have found you at a Search Engine for each keyword during the previous 90 days.
Important Note
When you upload your keywords, the Value Demand is added automatically. Any words with Value Demand equal to zero are not added to the MKL. So it is possible that some of the words you upload will not appear in your MKL.
This process can generate thousands of keywords as your site grows. So Brainstorm It! e-mails this list to prevent you from going over your 1,000 keyword limit. You receive it as an attached comma-separated text file (".csv").
Examine it at your convenience. Follow the tips included in the e-mail. This makes it easy for you to pick-and-choose which keywords to keep. You upload only the "good ones," avoiding the 1,000 keyword limit.
Important: It e-mails to the e-mail address that it has on record in your "My Account" section of SBI! (click on the link in the top right corner of Site Central). Make sure that address is up-to-date.
So What Is the Long Tail?
An important concept, one that we'll see more and more of as the world goes digital.
Here's an article from the TNT HQ about "The Long Tail of Marketing."
And here's one specifically about keywords... the larger and more successful your site, the longer and longer the tail.
As your site grows, you're first found for a few "long tail" keywords (very low Demand, but much less competitive keywords). In other words, your site will first be found (i.e., Top 20 listings at one or more engines) for...
- terms from "the long tail," words you are not even "trying" for, then...
- your easier TIER 3s, then...
- your harder TIER 3s and your TIER 2s and finally (and this may take 200+ pages of good content) the hardest keyword of all...
- your Site Concept Keyword!
A Final, Practical Tip
As your site grows, the long tail of keywords (for which your site is found) gets longer, running into many thousands of words. So when you get your e-mail with the keyword attachment, print it out. Find a relaxing spot. Review them and...
Analyze. Think. Act.
P.S. By the way, the longer your tail of keywords, the more stable is your site's traffic. No "Google Dance" will disrupt a gigantic base of "onesies and twosies." The total traffic delivered by the long tail will exceed your "Top 20" keywords!
